The Alley hosts spelling bee to help charity
Education and children related charities have been a main philanthropic focus of The Alley Charleston since they opened in November 2012. With the kickoff of the new school year vastly approaching, The Alley wanted to bring awareness to “Be a Mentor,” an important community partner of theirs. An organization that matches children in need with caring mentors in the Charleston area, Be a Mentor is gearing up for an active year. To help bring awareness to their mission and cause, The Alley Charleston will host the first annual So You Thought You Could Spell Spelling Bee on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m.
This fun, free and engaging event will feature some of the city’s top local celebrities and community leaders who will have to successful spell a series of words for a live audience. Modeled after the Scripps National Spelling Bee but with adult contestants and a lot less serious, there will be several rounds to give participants a chance to be crowned the winner.
Writer and humor blogger Bryce Donovan will be the event MC and some of the confirmed spellers include:
• Stephanie Barna, Charleston City Paper
• Darcy Shankland, Charleston magazine
• Colleen Condon, Charleston County Council
• Ayoka Lucas, Stylist, Blogger and Charleston Fashion Week Director
• Steve Palmer, Indigo Road Group
• Chris Frasier, Charleston County School District
The event is free and open to anyone to attend and audience participation is encouraged. To learn more, visit https://www.facebook.com/TheAlleyCharleston.
