Andrew Johnstone won the first installment of this year’s Player of the Week contest sponsored by Tony Pope State Farm Insurance of Mount Pleasant between Palmetto Christian, Bishop England and Wando football players.
Johnstone, a Palmetto Christian wide receiver and defensive back, was coach Jim Daniel’s pick after he hauled in four catches for 155 yards, including a 72-yard reception, during the Eagles’ game against Williamsburg Academy.
The senior also recorded two tackles on defense. Palmetto Christian is 2-1 this season after its most recent win against Lincoln this past Friday night. In their two wins, the Eagles have scored 62 and 78 points. During its only loss so far to Williamsburg, Palmetto Christian was held to 14 points.
With the series-opening win, Palmetto Christian takes the first advantage over Wando and Bishop England in this friendly contest rivalry. More than 300 votes were cast. Wando’s Alex Pumilia came in second place in the voting totals.
Every week during the high school football season, you vote among six players – two from each of the three East Cooper programs – for who you think is most deserving of the title of Player of the Week.
The voting process is done entirely online at www.MoultrieNews.com/POTW. Reporter Tyler Heffernan chooses one player from each of the three teams and each team’s respective head coach picks one player from his team.
You can only vote once. Every Wednesday, the newest set of nominations are announced in our print editions and on our website. Voting is open until the following Monday at noon, which leaves about five days for voting.
