Cape Romain Bull’s Island archery hunt canceled

  • Thursday, September 12, 2013

The annual Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge Bulls Island December white-tailed deer archery hunt, historically held during the first week in December, has been cancelled due to staff shortages and budget reductions.

In efforts to continue to offer a valuable outdoor recreation experience, the refuge has scheduled the annual November white-tailed deer archery hunt for Nov. 4-9. Archers who wish to participate in the November hunt must possess the required state hunting license and equipment. Each hunter will check in and sign the register before setting up camp and/or starting to hunt. Hunters under the age of 16 must have successfully completed a State approved hunters education course and be under the immediate supervision of an adult.

Bulls Island is located approximately three miles from the mainland. Therefore, during the week-long November hunt, registered hunters will be allowed to camp in a designated area. The camping area on Bulls Island will remain open from 9 a.m. on the Sunday preceding the hunt until noon on the Sunday following the hunt. Only registered hunters will be allowed to camp. Hunters must provide their own transportation to and from Bulls Island. Only portable hunting stands that will not injure trees are allowed. Firearms and ammunition, motorized equipment, crossbows, poison arrows, dogs, nails, wire, paint and flagging are prohibited. Bicycles are allowed on service roads. Visit Cape Romain’s website at http://www.fws.gov/caperomain for a copy of the hunt brochure. Hunt brochures are available at the Sewee Visitor & Environmental Education Center, 5821 Hwy 17 North, Awendaw, SC 29429 or call the Center at 928-3368.
