Colleton County football team shocks Wando, ends 36-game losing streak

A week after quelling its offensive struggles, the Wando football team allowed 40 points to Colleton County on Thursday night in a 40-37 loss.

The win snapped a 36-game losing streak for Colleton County, and the loss for the Warriors (2-2) means an 0-2 record away from Wando Stadium.

After trailing 20-7 at halftime, Wando scored 30 points in the second half. The Cougars scored on a 54-yard interception return with about two minutes left in the game to take a 10-point lead. Sophomore quarterback Bailey Hart quickly tried to make amends, though, with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Zola Davis. Colleton County (1-2) held on after the Warriors could not recover an onside kick attempt.

Wando’s only score in the first half came on a fumble recovery in the end zone by defensive back Chance Price off a bad punt snap. Junior running back Kenny Waring, who ran for 250 yards in the previous game, racked up 113 and a touchdown. His scoring play came early in the fourth quarter to give the Warriors a 30-26 lead.

But, the steady play of Colleton County quarter Ramon Hall was too much. Hall threw a 15-yard touchdown pass after Waring’s scoring play on the ensuing possession to retake the lead. Hall threw for three touchdowns and ran in another. The Cougars put the game out of reach with the interception return on Wando’s next offensive series.

Wando hosts Summerville, Sept. 20. Colleton County looks to start a winning streak with a road contest at West Ashley, Sept. 20.
