Xavier Kent ran for two touchdowns, and a stingy defense posted a shutout to lead the BEST Distributing Lions to a 12-0 victory over the 3H Land and Cattle Co. Cowboys in Mount Pleasant Recreation Department Small Fry (8-9 year olds) football action.

After a scoreless first quarter, Kent broke loose behind the blocking of Jack Moloney, Joshua King and Luke Beasenburg for a 36-yard gain to the Cowboys 10-yard line. Two plays later, Hayden Mincey pitched to Kent who rumbled in for the score. After a quick stop by the Lions defense, Kent would find the end zone again on a 33-yard score just before halftime.

William Gamble, River Wine, Andrew Simmons and the Cowboys defense made some adjustments in the second half and slowed down the Lions offense. However, the Cowboys offense, led by Chase Washington and Tyler Kirvin, were unable to get anything going against Nicholas Bischoff, Zayden Mauldin, Brice Minick and the rest of the Lions defensive unit.

With the win, Coach Mincey and the BEST Distributing Lions improve to 1-1, while Coach Hulen and the 3H Land and Cattle Co. Cowboys even their record to 1-1 on the season.

Jay Rhodes is an athletic coordinator of football, track, cross country and lacrosse with the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. Throughout the football season, Rhodes will write a recap of a selected game of the week within the recreation department.
