J.T. Waters won the second installment of this year’s Player of the Week contest sponsored by Tony Pope State Farm Insurance of Mount Pleasant between Palmetto Christian, Bishop England and Wando football players.

Waters, a Palmetto Christian quarterback, was coach Jim Daniel’s pick after Waters scored seven total touchdowns (five rushing, two passing) in a winning effort against Lincoln. He completed 9 of 13 passes for 160 yards and had nine carries for 268 yards.

The Eagles remain 2-1 after this past week’s game against Trinity-Byrnes was canceled due to weather. Palmetto Christian travels to Hilton Head Prep this Friday.

After winning both the first and second weeks of the Player of the Week contest, Palmetto Christian grew its advantage over Wando and Bishop England in this friendly rivalry. Wando’s Kenny Waring came in second place by just three votes. Palmetto Christian’s Ryan Roe finished third with four votes behind Waring.

Every week during the high school football season, you vote among six players – two from each of the three East Cooper programs – for who you think is most deserving of the title of Player of the Week.

This week is different, because Palmetto Christian’s game against Trinity-Byrnes was canceled. So, instead of six players, you’ll choose between four – two Wando and two Bishop England.

The voting process is done entirely online at www.MoultrieNews.com/POTW. Reporter Tyler Heffernan chooses one player from each team and each team’s respective head coach picks one player from his team.

You can only vote once. Every Wednesday, the newest set of nominations are announced in our print editions and on our website. Voting is open until the following Monday at noon, which leaves about five days for voting.

Tyler’s BE pick

Nick Shiver: The senior tailback amassed 180 yards on 17 carries, including two touchdowns (74, 37 yards) against Porter-Gaud. As a cornerback, he also had four solo tackles, two assists and a pass deflection.

BE coach John Cantey’s pick

Lawton Fosberry: The junior linebacker returned two interceptions for touchdowns, including one for 100 yards. He also had six solo tackles, three assists and two pass deflections against Porter-Gaud.

Tyler’s Wando pick

Tyler Ragsdale: In addition to having a great first name, the junior linebacker had seven solo tackles, three assists, a fumble recovery, two pass deflections and a blocked punt that was recovered for a touchdown against Colleton County.

Wando coach Jimmy Noonan’s pick

Zola Davis: The junior tight end caught seven passes for 73 yards against Colleton County. His longest reception went for 19 yards.
