James Island County Park hosts 2013 Carolina Green Fair Sept. 22

  • Friday, September 20, 2013

The Carolina Green Fair is partnering with Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission and Charleston County Environmental Management to make 2013 the best and greenest year to date. Over the years, the Carolina Green Fair has partnered with the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission to divert waste at county park events like the Lowcountry Cajun Festival. This year, the Carolina Green Fair brings their popular annual festival to the county parks. The Carolina Green Fair will be held at James Island County Park, on Sunday, Sept. 22 from noon to 6 p.m. and is free with park admission.

This year’s Carolina Green Fair (CGF) continues its mission to educate and encourage South Carolina residents to use environmentally friendly, products, services and technologies. With a beautiful new location at James Island County Park, this year’s Carolina Green Fair is ready to bring back the best programs and activities from years’ past as well as a new set of green-themed adventures.

As presenting sponsor at this year’s Carolina Green Fair, Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department will highlight the county’s green initiatives like recycling and composting, and also educate residents on the many offerings available to make their homes and businesses more eco-friendly. Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission staff will lead nature walks through James Island County Park. Festival attendees can take advantage of other attractions on-hand at James Island County Park like the Climbing Wall, slacklining and archery, making this year’s fair fun for a large variety of interests. There will also be a KidZone and Eco-Carnival to entertain the little ones. Those who prefer to relax can take in a fashion show at the Green Style Market, shop, or visit the Re-Trend’s Clothing Swap to learn how to maximize their clothing options.

The Carolina Green Fair will also be a feast for the senses by offering delicious food and cooking demos, featuring local chefs and “Foodpreneurs” from the Lowcountry’s favorite green-minded restaurants like Home Team BBQ and Verde. Visitors can quench their thirst with cold refreshments from New Belgium Brewery and Bota Box Wine. After a good meal, stop by the Medical University of South Carolina booth where there will be demos and sessions showcasing health and wellness, their Urban Farm Initiative and Outdoor Fitness. And, no festival is complete without the sounds of Charleston’s most popular bands on the main stage. This year’s headlining band will be Chickasaw Mud Puppies.

Subaru will be on site as the festival’s official auto sponsor. On hand to make sure nothing goes to waste will be Eco-Products and Food Waste Disposal, who will provide all compostable paper products and sort waste for delivery to Charleston County’s Bees Ferry Compost Facility. The fair averages an incredible 95% of its trash diverted from area landfills and has set the standard for other large scale events working toward their own green initiatives, including the Lowcountry Cajun Festival, which diverted 95 percent of its waste in 2012.

Carolina Green Fair is sure to make sustainability fun for all ages. This year’s event will be free with admission to James Island County Park ($1 per person, or free with the Charleston County Parks Gold Pass). For more information on the festival, visit www.carolinagreenfair.com.
