Mount Pleasant Regional’s newest librarian, Mike Nelson, grew up in Windsor Locks, Conn. (12 miles north of Hartford). He headed south in 1997 - to escape the harsh New England winters - and settled in Orlando, Fla. Back then, the best paying Disney job (that didn’t involve selling plastic Disney memorabilia) was driving the Disney buses (Mike didn’t have a CDL license, but Disney hired and trained him). While at Disney, he met his wife, Karen, who also worked at Disney.
During Mike’s stint at Disney, he had a part time job at Universal Studios Travel Company, selling Disney vacations over the phone. Before long, part time became full time. Unfortunately, when layoffs ensued, his position was eliminated.
However, Mike’s telephone skills led him to a position with the Orange County Library, in telephone reference. He enjoyed his new job so much that he pursued an M.L.I.S. (Master of Library and Information Science) degree at Florida State University, completing his degree online while working full time, with partial tuition assistance from the Friends of the Orange County Library.
After several years in Florida, Mike and Karen moved to Cumberland County, N.C., to be closer to family. Mike worked for the Cumberland County Library System, where he helped open the first library/elementary school joint venture in the county. The West Regional Branch was located on the campus of New Century Elementary School. During the day, the library and school were “locked off” from each other, but after hours, the public could access both the school library’s and the public library’s collections. What an exciting time to be involved. And then something even more exciting happened: Mike’s son Ryan arrived.
Several years ago, Mike moved to South Carolina, working first at the St. Andrew’s Regional Library, and more recently at Mount Pleasant Regional, where he helps patrons on the reference desk, coordinates library volunteers, runs the Monday Book Club and books the display case. Currently, Mount Pleasant Regional has Patriot’s Point’s collection of educational materials on display, but Mike’s always looking for additional folks who are interested in displaying their collections.
Mike’s hobbies include playing Legos with Ryan (now 7), fishing and rooting for the Red Sox. Go Sox! It probably won’t surprise you to learn that Mike also enjoys reading, especially fantasy, and his favorite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien and Terry Brooks.
