Eblen

A book launch party will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 to celebrate the publication of “Christmas in the Imperfect Tense,” a collection of true stories of “holidays gone wrong” by local author Joyce Putnam Eblen. Eblen, an Isle of Palms resident for more than 30 years, shares stories spanning from her childhood in the 1950s through 1989, the first Christmas after Hurricane Hugo.

Although the stories are actual events in the author’s life, they represent how the holiday season really plays out in the lives of many people. Unlike the idyllic scenes depicted in TV commercials and on Christmas cards, the holidays in real life often include relatives who don’t get along with each other, lights that burn out as soon as they are hung and meals in which some crucial item is either forgotten or burned to a crisp. The author hopes that her readers will see themselves and the people they know in these humorous stories.

The book launch party is free and open to the public, although participants are asked to bring a lawn chair for seating. It will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Jazzercise studio at 493 La Mesa Road. (The Jazzercise studio is located in the Riverside Center off Long Point Road across from Oak Park and Hobcaw Creek. Jazzercise is at the very far end of the complex across from the Charleston Nut Company. Free parking is available.)

Eblen will be giving a reading from the book at the event and signed copies will be available for purchase. “Christmas in the Imperfect Tense” by Joyce Putnam Eblen also can be purchased online at www.buybooksontheweb.com or by calling toll-free at 1-877-BUYBOOK. It is available online through both Amazon and Barnes and Noble. One dollar from the sale of each book will be donated to Operation Christmas Child to send shoebox gifts to children in desperate circumstances throughout the world.
