This is a team that started 0-2?

The Bishop England football team made short work of North Charleston, 38-0, on Thursday night for its third consecutive win. Senior Nick Shiver had three touchdowns, including a 96-yard interception return for a score in the second quarter.

“We’re young, and it’s been a huge learning experience,” coach John Cantey said. “We have a really strong offensive line, and we’re going to rely on them.”

Bishop England (3-2) found the end zone on its first four offensive possessions en route to a 35-0 halftime lead. Shiver made the second quarter his own with a 48-yard scoring run to start the period and then the long interception return on the ensuing Cougars (0-5) possession to stop their longest drive of the night.

“He’s a heck of an athlete and a heck of a kid,” Cantey said. After watching then-senior DeAngelo Stephenson receive the majority of the carries last season at tailback, Shiver is in the spotlight. “He knows it’s his turn now,” Cantey added.

The Battling Bishops tried to work out their passing kinks early. Senior quarterback Reed Fosberry tossed a 17-yard touchdown to Boo Baird and then a 37-yard touchdown on the next possession to Shiver for a quick 14-0 lead. Fullback C.J. Michel added a goal line score late in the first quarter.

Bishop England tallied 201 yards in the first half to North Charleston’s 87 before favoring its bench players the rest of the game. The Cougars fumbled four times in the first quarter.

Matthew Mellin booted a 35-yard field goal for the only score of the second half. Cantey said after the game he was proud of his team for posting a shutout and credited a “bend, don’t break mentality.”

Bishop England will look to improve to 3-0 in region play next week when it hosts Battery Creek.
