Raising children in today’s rapidly changing culture can leave parents wondering what to do. With the return to school, local parents want to know how to motivate their children to responsible behavior and greater achievement.

Two separate parenting classes, one for parents of young children and one for parents of teens, will again be offered in Mount. Pleasant area schools this fall. The classes are open to all and are being sponsored through the Charleston County Community Education Program and Charleston County Schools. The first four-week series began Oct. 1 and the second one begins Oct. 29 and will be taught by PCI Certified Parent Coach, Chris Donavan.

As an author, public speaker, newspaper columnist and mother of eight (four birth and four bonus children), Donavan offers expertise mixed with humor and personal experience. While teaching a class at Moultrie Middle School last year, one parent asked for a suggestion in dealing with children arguing while riding in the car. she recounted something that worked well with her children, “Simply take your foot off the gas and announce that you can’t concentrate. The car goes 10 mph when children are arguing”. With a smile, she adds, “While it might frustrate the motorists behind me on the Connector, it never took more than 30 seconds for the embarrassed children to quiet down. After doing this one time, I never had to say another word. Simply taking my foot off the gas resulted in silence. No more yelling, no more nagging, no more begging.”
