William Schnell and the Charleston Combatives Moultrie team used a big fourth quarter to rally past Dick’s Sporting Goods Laing for a 22-8 victory in Mount Pleasant Recreation Department junior varsity football action. Schnell caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Chance Priest with 3:32 left in the game and then sealed the win moments later with an 81-yard fumble return.

Laing got on the scoreboard first when Grayson Silvester slipped past the Moultrie defense and raced 96 yards for the score. Laing moved the ball well throughout the game behind the rushing attack of Nick Wilson, Da’Von Stuckey and Eddie Scott and the blocking of Jaelen Edwards and Ryan Satter, but were unable to punch it into the end zone again.

Moultrie would answer the Laing score when Luke McCaleb raced in from 47 yards out behind the blocking of Charlie Boyd and Paul Kowalchick. The Moultrie defense got strong play from Colby McQueen and David Kowalchick and an interception by Ben Wallace to ensure the victory.

Coach Hagins and the Charleston Combatives Moultrie squad earned their first victory in the season, while Coach Cypress and the Dick’s Sporting Goods Laing team dropped to 2-3.

Jay Rhodes is an athletic coordinator of football, track, cross country and lacrosse with the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department. Throughout the football season, Rhodes will write a recap of a selected game of the week within the recreation department.
