Trident Academy to hold conference on dyslexia

South Carolina Branch of the International Dyslexia Association will host a conference on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Trident Academy (1455 Wakendaw Rd.) from 8 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. The conference is ideal for teachers and parents and all who are passionate about working with students with language-based learning differences.

Fifteen to 20 percent of the population has a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability and the most common cause of reading, writing and spelling difficulties. What are the red flags for dyslexia? What is the best way to remediate and when? These questions will be answered ay “Dyslexia: A Call for Multi-Disciplinary Intervention.”

The conference will feature sessions on “Struggling Readers and Orton-Gillingham,” “The Importance of Oral Language Development in Reading Comprehension” and “What it is Like to be a Dyslexic Learner: A Simulation.” These sessions will be presented by therapists and teachers and will allow plenty of time for questions. There will also be a screening of HBO”s documentary The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.
