Joe Sweatt won the fifth installment of this year's Player of the Week contest sponsored by Tony Pope State Farm Insurance of Mount Pleasant between Palmetto Christian, Wando and Bishop England football players.
Sweatt, a sophomore defensive lineman for Palmetto Christian, was reporter Tyler Heffernan's pick after he led the Eagles in tackles with seven, caused two fumbles and had one sack during the win at Colleton Prep, Sept. 27.
Despite limited varsity playing experience, Sweatt has quickly become one of Palmetto Christian's best lineman, especially at getting to the opposing quarterback. He has 18 solo tackles this season and an assist, including one sack. He also has two pass deflections, three recovered fumbles and two forced fumbles.
With the win, Palmetto Christian took a 3-2 series lead over Wando in this friendly contest rivalry. Wando senior defensive lineman Love Scott came in second place by a narrow margin, followed by Bishop England running back Nick Shiver. The Battling Bishops are still searching for their first win this season.
This week's contest does not include Wando players, because the Warriors had a bye week, thanks to a Week 0 game against James Island.
Every week during the high school football season, you vote among six players – two from each of the three East Cooper programs – for who you think is most deserving of the title of Player of the Week. This week, though, you'll choose from two Bishop England players and two Palmetto Christian players.
The voting process is done entirely online at www.MoultrieNews.com/POTW. Reporter Tyler Heffernan chooses one player from each of the three teams and each team's respective head coach picks one player from his team.
You can only vote once. Every Tuesday, the newest set of nominations are announced on our website. Voting is open until the following Monday at noon, which leaves about six days for voting.
