Local Johnson Controls branch named tops

Johnson Controls, the global leader in delivering solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings, has named its Charleston service branch the recipient of its top performer award in recognition of its outstanding customer satisfaction scores. The branch was selected from the more than 150 Johnson Controls service branches nationwide. The Top Performer award is semi-annual award based on customer surveys on the branch’s performance and focus on the customer.

“Winning this award reflects our passion for delivering reliable, responsive services that positively impact the efficiency, operations and comfort of buildings across Charleston,” said Jeff Messick, service branch manager.

The Charleston branch has delivered products, services and solutions that increase energy efficiency, lower operating costs and improve safety in buildings in the Charleston area for more than 50 years. The company works with more than 200 local, state and federal government customers as well as industrial and commercial customers, including the City of Charleston, Dupont Cooper River, Cummins Technical Center, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Medical University of South Carolina.

Earlier this year, an event was held at the Charleston Maritime Center where members of the Johnson Controls executive leadership team from Milwaukee, Wis., presented the award to the local branch employees and recognized them for their efforts and attention to serving their customers.

The Style Bus

Vanity Salon in Mount Pleasant has launched a unique new styling salon concept called The Style Bus. What was once an 18-person shuttle bus has been converted into a mobile styling salon complete with full styling stations and the capability to provide most services offered in the salon.

The idea started when Kim Coleman, owner of Vanity Salon, ran across a shuttle bus for sale online and thought it may make a great mobile option for her clients. She and her husband Tim drove out to look at the bus and asses the possibilities. “When Tim told me he could take out the seats and install wood floors and permanent styling stations, we started to feel like this might actually happen,” says Coleman.

The team at Vanity Salon is hired to style brides and their bridal parties for more than 100 weddings in the Charleston area each year and most of these require the team to perform these services at an off-site location. The Style Bus will be available as an additional service for bridal parties and can also serve as a bridal suite if the wedding venue does not have an adequate location for the bride to dress and prep for her walk down the aisle. In addition, The Style Bus will be available for bachelorette parties, birthdays parties, anniversary parties, little princess parties or any occasion where women choose to have the stylists come to them.

“We are so excited about this new opportunity at Vanity Salon. The Style Bus allows us to offer a really fun and different experience to our clients,” says Kim. The Style Bus offers hair styling, make-up application, eyelash application, mini-manicures and more. Vanity Salon is located at 1909 Highway 17 near the Towne Centre in Mount Pleasant. Charleston County Aviation Authority

Four new managers have joined the staff at the Charleston County Aviation Authority and a fifth person has been promoted.

John A. Connell has been promoted to deputy director of engineering and planning. He replaces Jim Fann who retired at the end of June

Connell joined the Aviation Authority in 2010 as the director of engineering and facilities. In his new role, he will oversee the engineering, operations, maintenance and special projects departments. Connell has private and public sector engineering experience and was a civil engineer in the U.S. Air Force. A licensed professional engineer in South Carolina since 1999, Connell is a graduate of Clarkson University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering. He also holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Clemson University and a master of business administration from the University of South Carolina.

The new staff members are:

• Kim McLendon, manager of information technology

• Jim Peacher, manager of airport security

• Pam Murphy, manager of procurement

• Charlene Gunnells, manager of corporate communications

McLendon manages all information and telecommunications technology at the three authority airports: Charleston International, Charleston Executive Airport (JZI) on Johns Island and Mount Pleasant Regional Airport (LRO). Previously McLendon was a senior network applications professional for DataSpring, a South Carolina-based technology consulting firm. She has more than 30 years’ experience in information technology and as a business owner in the fields of accounting, taxes, computer hardware and software programming. McLendon is a graduate of Davidson (N.C.) College where she earned an economics degree.

A graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in business management, Peacher was a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) special agent for more than 27 years during which he established and supervised the first DEA Task Force in the South Carolina. Peacher previously worked for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Charleston International Airport as the assistant federal security director for law enforcement and at the National Law Enforcement Corrections and Technology Center as program manager with oversight for a port security initiative (Operation Seahawk) and the radiological/nuclear detection system at the Port of Charleston.

Murphy joined the Aviation Authority after 10 years managing large scale, companywide acquisitions, contracts and projects for Nordstrom in Seattle, Wash. Prior to that, Murphy was the corporate purchasing manager for FlightSafety Boeing (Boeing’s first joint venture company) in Seattle. She also worked as a senior procurement agent for Boeing responsible for Information Technology contracts, projects and supplier relationships.

A graduate of Long Beach City College in Long Beach, Calif., where she earned a business management degree, Murphy has more than 30 years’ experience in procurement, contract development, project management, strategic planning, and leading, managing and training staff.

Gunnells came to the Aviation Authority from The Citadel, where she spent 12 years managing media relations for the military college in Charleston. Prior to that, she worked as a newspaper journalist in Illinois and South Carolina, including The Beaufort Gazette and The Post and Courier in Charleston. In her new role with the Aviation Authority, she will be responsible for a variety of media, community and public relations activities, internal and external communications as well as social media.

Gunnells is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She earned her master’s in education from The Citadel.

Shelter Mortgage

Dawn Thomas has joined The Jaffee Group at Shelter Mortgage Company as a senior loan officer. Thomas has 18 years of finance and lending experience with Wachovia and most recently as the branch manager of BB&T on Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant. She was recognized for her success in building solid customer relationships and being a top producer at both banks. She is a Lowcountry native, a member of Seacoast Church, the Charleston Trident Chamber of Commerce and the Charleston Home Builders Association.
