Coastal Community Foundation announces new board members

Coastal Community Foundation welcomes eight new board members. Founded in 1974 with $9,000 from the Rotary Club of Charleston to serve the tri-county area, the organization now manages more than $150 million in combined assets held in over 620 individualized funds. Thousands of donors are served and charitable organizations supported throughout eight coastal Carolina counties. The foundation is committed to taking the broadest perspective of community, evidenced through its extensive non-profit involvement and initiatives. Ranging from arts and health-related organizations to educational programming, conserving the environment, strengthening neighborhoods and sustaining human needs, Coastal Community Foundation is connected to the full spectrum of charitable and non-profit organizations. Meet the foundation’s newest board members

Todd Abedon (Charleston County) not only co-founded Chartwell Housings, a real estate investment and management firm focused on multi-family communities, but he has been visionary in the non-profit field as well. Starting Operation Home in 1997 followed by Chucktown Squash in 2008, Abedon works all angles to make South Carolina a better place. In addition to his professional and non-profit work, Abedon, also a Tuft’s University graduate, is past-chair of Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley’s Council on Homelessness and Affordable Housing and former founding board member of the Lowcountry Housing Trust, an advocacy group for affordable housing in the region. He also serves on the South Carolina Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness. He, his wife Emily and their four children live on Sullivan’s Island.

Gordon Granger (Beaufort County) was an executive with Best Foods for more than 30 years, working in countries throughout Latin America – collecting art and enjoying the culture as he and his wife, Gillian, raised five children. Although he was born in Argentina, Granger and his wife decided to retire in South Carolina and built a house on three acres of Spring Island, located south of Beaufort on the Broad River. He remarked, “After retiring, I knew that we were successful enough, and we had been thinking of helping other people, but we just didn’t know how to go about the distribution or who would handle it.” Having established a fund at the foundation in 2000, Granger will add a wealth of personal and professional experience to the board.

Cedric Green (Charleston County) and his wife, Rachell, live in metro Charleston, where he works as the general manager of Southern Electric Operations at South Carolina Electric and Gas Company. Prior to his work at SCE&G, Green spent seven years in fossil and hydro operations, working in engineering. Although he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in Mechanical Engineering in 1997, he later returned to earn his MBA and Masters of Mechanical Engineering and is now a Ph.D. student in the Mechanical Engineering program at USC. Additionally, Green serves on the Board of Directors for Charleston Trident Urban League and as chair of the Leadership South Carolina Board of Trustees.

Jim Marks (Beaufort County) has more than 35 years of experience in the education sector. Having earned an undergraduate degree from Princeton and a graduate degree from Harvard, Marks has worked as a teacher, dean of faculty, headmaster and consultant to educational organizations. He comes to the foundation with a broad perspective and large wealth of knowledge. Although he retired from his consultant position at Educator’s Collaborative in 2008, he remains an active trustee at Beaufort Academy. He has also served as a trustee at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, Elgin Academy and Indian Mountain School. Additionally, Marks is a previous president of the Elementary School Heads Association and the Independent School Association of Greater Chicago.

Lawton Smith (Colleton County) joins the foundation’s board with more than 14 years of diverse professional experience. Born and raised in Walterboro, Smith returned to the Lowcountry after his years at Clemson followed by time spent in Massachusetts, Charlotte and Austin, Texas. He is the president of Rhodes Oil Company and the founder of Outlier Apps, a startup that creates innovative smartphone applications for South Carolina and the world at large. In addition to his lengthy professional resume, Smith serves as director and nominations committee chair at the Walterboro-Colleton Chamber of Commerce, director for the Bank of Walterboro Board of Directors and president of the Colleton County Clemson Club.

The Reverend Bill Stanfield (Charleston County) is a co-founder of the Metanoia Community Development Corporation of North Charleston where he currently serves as the chief executive officer. Prior to his work in youth leadership development, housing development and economic development with Metanoia, Rev. Stanfield served as a chaplain, associate minister and pastoral care coordinator. In addition to his current role as Metanoia’s CEO, Rev. Stanfield is an associate minister at St. Matthew Baptist Church and was named North Charleston’s Citizen of the Year by the North Charleston Citizen’s Advisory Council. Most recently, he and his wife have become the proud adoptive parents to two young boys from Ethiopia.

Terry Stinson (Berkeley County) is the diversity manager for Santee Cooper in Moncks Corner. In her position, she is responsible for Santee Cooper’s corporate diversity initiatives and the company’s affirmative action plan and assists with recruiting, training and retaining a diverse work force. In her spare time, Stinson serves as president elect and past diversity chairperson for the Tri-County Human Resource Management Association. She is also a member of the Trident Regional Educational Center Board and has served as a member of the Giving Back to Berkeley County Fund Grants Committee at Coastal Community Foundation. Stinson is a certified professional in Human Resources and has been recognized by the Riley Institute at Furman University as a Diversity Fellow.

Dawn Robinson’s (Berkeley County) career at First Citizens Bank began more than 15 years ago after holding positions at NBSC and C&S Bank. She currently serves as Charleston Commercial Area Executive and is responsible for leading the bank’s team of commercial relationship managers in the greater Charleston market. In that role, she partners with local small businesses and commercial clients to help them meet their financial goals. In addition to her bank responsibilities, the Pinopolis resident serves on several local boards and is a proud graduate of Leadership Charleston. Robinson is also a former Rotary Club Exchange Team member and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award for her many years of service to the North Charleston Rotary Club. In her spare time, the Wofford graduate enjoys being with her husband and two daughters.

This year also marks a change in the foundation board’s leadership. The foundation announces that Bill Medich, Senior Vice President of South Carolina Bank and Trust, as its newest board chair. David Jensen of Wells Fargo Advisors will continue to serve as secretary and treasurer.

Coastal Community Foundation would also like to offer a huge thank you to its retiring board members: Henry Blackford, III, Kathleen Bounds, Frank Brumley, Norman Brunswig, David Smalls and Timothy Williams.
