Charleston’s original zombie run is back. The second annual rUNdead Charleston 5K returns on Saturday, Oct. 26 at a new location – North Charleston Wannamaker County Park.
Presented by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission and On Purpose Adventures, this 5K race will now take place on the winding, beautiful trails of Wannamaker just before sunset. This course will take runners through woods and clearings, over bridges, across creeks, along ponds, and of course, through a maze of blood-thirsty zombies.
Not only will runners be racing against the clock on rugged terrain, they will be dodging the undead at this challenging and exciting 5K. Participants will be given a belt with three detachable flags. As runners make their way through the course, zombies will attempt to grab the flags. Runners who bring two canned goods for donation to the Lowcountry Food Bank will receive an extra health flag before the race, increasing their chance of “survival” to the end of the course.
Runners are also encouraged to dress in costume. Following the race will be the Aftermath post-race party, featuring live music, a costume contest, a youth area, vendors, food, beverages and an awards ceremony. New this year to the post-race party will be the showing of a zombie film on an outdoor movie screen. For details on the movie selection, please visit www.rundead5k.com. Due to its rating, the movie shown will not be recommended for children under 17.
Gates open at 2 p.m., and the race begins at 5 p.m. Fees to run are $48, or $40 for residents of Charleston County. Runners ages 12-15 may compete in the race, but must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Race registration fees include a T-shirt, beer token (with a valid ID), flag belt and entrance to the Aftermath party.
Alternatively, a limited number of participants can sign up to serve as zombies. Zombie registration fees are $28, or $23 for residents of Charleston County.
Online registration is available at www.rundead5k.com and is open until Friday, Oct. 25. Space is limited so runners and zombies are encouraged to register in advance. Packet pickup and on-site registration will be offered from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at James Island County Park, Thursday, Oct. 24 at Palmetto Islands County Park and Friday, Oct. 25 at Wannamaker County Park.
Spectators are invited to cheer on runners and zombies for $5, or free with a donation of two canned food items. Kids 12 and under are free as spectators. This race supports the Lowcountry Food Bank, and all attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit those in need.
