Charleston Symphony Orchestra opens Masterworks series with Dvořák Symphony No. 7

  • Sunday, October 20, 2013

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) will present three concerts featuring Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, Schumann’s Overture to Manfred and Schubert’s Lieder on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-19 at 7:30 p.m. at Sottile Theatre, 44 George St.

The CSO is launching its Music Director Search and six candidates will present themselves to the Charleston community this 2013-2014 season by conducting each of the six Masterworks performances. Conductor and CSO Music Director Candidate, Perry So, will lead the orchestra and Jennifer Luiken will be guest mezzo-soprano.

“The symphony we are exploring is music from a time of immense social change, changes that opened up the ‘magic circle’ of European art music to include for the first time marginal voices such as Antonín Dvořák’s,” said CSO Music Director Candidate, Perry So, “Coming upon the heels of his international success, the seventh symphony is perhaps Dvořák’s most overt flirtation with the international style of his time and an affectionate homage to Brahms’ music to boot. Yet the West Slavic folk and dance idioms that were such constant streams of inspiration to him are abundantly evident also, and it is the interplay of these various elements that so poignantly evoke the cultural complexities of its time, and what remains fascinating and intoxicating about this music today.”
