The Palmetto Christian football team, without senior quarterback J.T. Waters, struggled in a 51-32 loss at Northwood Academy this past Friday night.

Waters, the Eagles’ leading rusher and passer, did not play for an undisclosed reason. It was Palmetto Christian’s first loss in the region, while catapulting the Chargers (6-2 overall, 2-1 region) up in the standings.

Northwood jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Eighth grader Cale Lewis got his first start at quarterback for the Eagles (5-2, 1-1) and threw for 185 yards on 21-of-43 passing. He had three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Northwood quarterback Will Lloyd completed nearly a third of Lewis’ total completions (8) but boasted an average of 23 more yards per pass than Lewis, as the Chargers made a habit of big plays.

In addition to Lloyd, three other Northwood players had at least 90 offensive yards. On the ground, the Chargers successfully rotated four different rushers throughout the game.

For the Eagles, only senior running back Ryan Roe, who was back from an injury, was a rushing threat. He ran for 235 yards on 35 carries and a pair of scores.

Senior wide receiver Will Tuchfarber was the main beneficiary of the passing game, hauling in eight catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior Jake Iriart led the defense in tackles with seven primary and two assists. Tuchfarber, who also plays linebacker, added six tackles.

Palmetto Christian looks to rebound with a home game on Friday against Hilton Head Christian Academy (5-2, 2-0), which is riding a five-game winning streak. Hilton Head Christian has won its previous three games by at least 21 points.
