Patriots Point unleashed its new mascot, Scrappy, on Friday in the Hangar Bay of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown.

The Patriots Point Development Authority Board and children from Gateway Academy Child Development Center were on hand to meet him.

Scrappy was a real-life dog who sailors snuck onto the ship in a garbage can in 1943 during a fueling stop in Pearl Harbor. He spent a year on the ship boosting the morale of the men and was featured in films shown back in the United States.

“In an effort to make Patriots Point more engaging for young children, while at the same time preserve the rich history of the USS Yorktown, we developed what we know will be a hit among all the families who visit us,” Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette said. “We understand there’s a lot of competition for children’s attention these days and we are committed to making Patriots Point a place they want to visit year after year. They are our future.

“We plan on telling the same stories in new and innovative ways to make the attraction appealing to the next generation,” Burdette added.

The addition is just one small piece of a $400,000 spending approval the Patriots Point Development Authority board made last year to improve the overall museum experience through a three-year master plan.

The mascot will make appearances on the ship as well as at events such as Sunday’s Children’s Day Festival, Christmas parades and farmers markets. Scrappy merchandise, such as coloring books and children’s books, will be available for purchase in the museum gift shop also. His image will also be added to directional signs onboard the ship. And Burdette added that the authority is looking to hire additional people to perform as the mascot.
