Cario earns sixth grade volleyball title
The parking lot was full of “East of the Cooper” Spirit on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Bees Landing Recreation Center in Charleston. Cars, Van and SUV’s were decorated with school mascots, sayings and cheers.
No. 2 seeded Cario Middle School and No. 4 seeded Moultrie Middle School had advanced to the Sixth Grade North Division Post Season Tournament in the Lowcountry Volleyball League.
The 5:30 p.m. championship face off went three games before the winner was determined. The first two games split with Cario winning game No. 1 and Moultrie winning game No. 2.
In Game No. 3 – the Championship Game - the score “see saw-ed” for the first few points. It was tied 2-2 in the blink of an eye. Cario’s Emma Fields served three points, which included two aces, to put them up 5-2. However, Moultrie’s defense earned themselves a sideout and opportunities to score.
Moultrie’s Chloe Berda and Gracie Moneyhun stepped up to serve five points between the two of them. Moultrie pulled ahead 9-8. Cario was forced to call a timeout. When the game resumed, Cario’s Grey Gosnell spiked the volleyball into Moultrie territory to tie the game 9-9. Cario’s momentum surged as Gosnell shot another spiked ball at the Moultrie defense to put Cario ahead 10-9.
As both teams battled, the score remained very close. Cario won the game and the match. Cario Middle School was awarded the 2013 tournament championship. Moultrie Middle School, who defeated No. 1 Christ Our King the day before, was awarded the 2013 tournament runner up.
