Port Authority grant connects kids with global water crisis

The Water Missions International Educators’ Think Tank received a $2,000 South Carolina Ports Authority Community Giving grant this October. The grant supported printing of Lessons in a Bucket resource books and other materials recently distributed among lead elementary science teachers in Charleston County.

Lessons in a Bucket is a youth advocacy initiative of Water Missions International, a Charleston-based safe water nonprofit organization. The program provides free teaching materials and interactive activities to educate children about the science of safe water, the global water crisis and the importance of access to safe, healthy drinking water.

“We are honored to receive our first-ever grant from the South Carolina Ports Authority to help fund Lessons in a Bucket,” said Molly Greene, co-founder and chairman of the board at Water Missions International. “Lessons in a Bucket activities teach about the science of safe water across academic disciplines – and they are free for teachers, parents and students to use. Our aim is to provide materials that engage, educate and inspire youth to help solve the global water crisis.”

Lessons in a Bucket teaching materials include games, lesson plans and statistics about the global water crisis. Teachers, parents and students can access these resources on the website, www.lessonsinabucket.org. The website houses all current learning resources and will continue to be updated with new materials, in order to provide a continuous variety of learning activities and expanded opportunities for engagement.

“Water Missions International is yielding great results in our community and within the many countries where it works to provide safe water,” said SCPA President and CEO Jim Newsome. “Through its Lessons in a Bucket program, WMI brings home the global water crisis to students throughout the Lowcountry and educates them about water conservation.”
