Dr. Amanda Seay

Charleston‐area dentist and National Spokesperson for Wrigley’s Orbit For Kids Sugarfree Gum, AmandaSeay, DDS, hopes to increase awareness surrounding National Dental Hygiene Month. Focusing on early detection, she has highlighted three ways your dentist may be your first line of defense in maintaining good health. “Most people see their dentist twice a year at least ‐ giving us the opportunity to be a gateway to their overall health.

We offer screenings and preventative services as part of a routine hygiene exam and they can be invaluable in detecting health issues early on” says Seay.

Three services at a routine hygiene visit that can forcast health issues:

• Blood pressure screenings taken at each visit.

Untreated high blood pressure can lead or contribute to atherosclerosis, stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, diabetes and other health conditions.

67 million American adults (31 percent) have high blood pressure — that’s 1 in every 3 American adults.

• Head and neck exam completed at every visit.

Dentists may see a skin issue or find an enlarged lymph node that should be evaluated further. Head and neck cancer accounts for five to 10 percent of all cancers in the United States and 3% of all malignant cancers in the US.

• Oral cnacer screening completed annually.

A surface exam is a necessary part of your head and neck exam. The Velscope is an adjunct to this service, enabling dentists to see beneath the surface giving them the best chance of early detection of oral cancer. At least 85 percent of head and neck cancers are oral cancer.

Dr. Seay was one of Dental Products Report’s Top 25 Women in Dentistry. She is the mother of four children, all under the age of 9 and an active participant in outreach initiatives such as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s “Give Back a Smile,” Our Lady of Mercy Wellness Center, and the East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) Dental Clinic.

Dr. Seay and her team at Park West Dentistry hold themselves to a high standard of care, as such these screenings and preventative services are offered as part of any exam and are invaluable to maintaining the best health.
