The last time the Goose Creek football team lost was September 3, 2011 -- not counting the SCHSL-ruled disqualification last season. This past Friday night, Wando tried to answer the more than two-year long question: Can the Gators be beaten?

The Warriors had a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and then took a 21-20 advantage in the second quarter, but ultimately, the Gators exhaustive options for offensive firepower were too much.

Goose Creek (9-0 overall, 2-0 region) won 49-21 at Fulmer Field to hand Wando (3-6, 1-2) its second consecutive loss. The 4A No. 3-state ranked Gators totaled 465 total yards of offense, while the Warriors were limited to 277.

After starting the regular season as the third-string quarterback, Wando junior quarterback Will Coleman has increased his confidence and playing time. He completed 16-of-27 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns and an interception.

Both scoring tosses went to Trevor Behrens for 11 and 44 yards. They were Behrens’ first trips to the end zone this season and gave Wando an early lead.

But, Goose Creek scored four touchdowns in the second quarter to quell the Warriors’ upset bid. Wando senior running back Trevor Pedersen had 53 rushing yards, including a five-yard score in the second quarter.

Wando failed to score after intermission, and Goose Creek scored 29 unanswered points after Pedersen’s score gave the Warriors a 21-20 edge.

Wando standout defenders Mat Norman and Ryan Williams combined for 17 solo tackles and 14 assists. Norman also caused a fumble.

The Warriors look to rebound on Friday against winless Cane Bay (0-9 overall, 0-2 region).
