Wando had been in a similar situation before. In Week 3 this season, Colleton County, which had lost 36 consecutive games, shocked the Warriors in a rare Cougars victory.
Entering this past Friday night’s game against the Warriors, Cane Bay had lost 10 consecutive games, including a winless 0-9 current season.
Wando refused to go through that again, though, winning 34-13 in front of the ChopHouse to clinch third place in 4A Region 7.
Goose Creek and Stratford, which are both undefeated, battle on Friday for the region title, while West Ashley grabbed fourth and Cane Bay was handed fifth.
On Friday night, Wando outscored Cane Bay 20-6 in the second half to pull away. Wide receiver Darius Wade had five receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Six other Warriors caught passes and eight players combined for 128 rushing yards.
Linebacker Ryan Williams had a team-high six solo tackles, three assists, four quarterback hurries and five ball deflections. Fellow linebacker Mat Norman continued his impressive season, contributing five solo tackles, three assists, three ball deflections and a forced fumble.
Like last season, Wando has a strong core of linebackers. Norman leads the team in total tackles, Tyler Ragsdale is second and Williams is fourth among Warrior defenders.
Before Friday’s game, Cane Bay (0-10, 0-3) hadn’t scored more than one touchdown since Oct. 4 in a 34-20 loss to Colleton County.
The Warriors (4-6, 2-2) step outside of their region on Friday in the regular season finale at Sumter (4-5-1).
