The attack by Union forces to capture Battery Wagner located on Morris Island took place on July 18,1863. Although the assault on the fort was unsuccessful, this battle has its place in history due to the fact that the attack was led by the 54th Massachussetts Volunteer Infantry, one of the first major American military units made up of black soldiers.  This battle was portrayed in the Academy Award-winning movie "Glory."
