WMI assesses magnitude of relief response to Super Typhoon Haiyan victims

  • Monday, November 11, 2013

Water Missions International is working diligently with partner organizations to assist with disaster relief aid for victims of super Typhoon Haiyan. The largest storm in recorded history, Haiyan struck the central Philippines Friday morning, slamming the islands with rain and gusts of wind up to 235 mph. Massive flooding and sustained winds of 195 have destroyed property and displaced thousands. With power lines and communications down, it’s difficult to discern the magnitude of Haiyan’s impact and the havoc it will continue to wreck as it moves towards neighboring nations.

“Disastrous flooding contaminates water sources and creates a scarcity of the one thing most vital to survival—safe drinking water. Water Missions International is currently providing consultation to partnering organizations on how to help those devastated by this storm. If needed, we have 40 disaster response units ready to ship and our staff is on call to mobilize,” said Co-Founder and CEO of Water Missions International George Greene III, PE, PhD.

Water Missions International is continuing to gain a better understanding of the magnitude of the needs of those affected by this unprecedented typhoon and the capacity in which Water Missions International will respond. Please stay tuned as Water Missions International determines the best relief efforts to provide relief to victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Previously, Water Missions International has responded to some of the largest natural disasters around the world, including the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2008 Sichuan China earthquake, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. Most recently the organization provided safe water treatment systems alongside Operation Blessing to victims of disastrous flooding in Mexico this past September.
