Non-region loss no matter to Wando in defeat to Sumter

  • Monday, November 11, 2013

It's hard to say a regular season game doesn't matter, but this past Friday night, when the Wando football team traveled to Sumter for a non-region contest, there wasn't much to be gained or lost by the final result.

The Warriors had already clinched third place in its region behind Goose Creek and Stratford. They secured a spot in the 4A Division I playoffs and will face a road game at top seed Byrnes in the opening round.

On Friday night, fighting for not much more than morale, Wando lost 24-12 to finish its season with a 4-7 record.

Junior running back Kenny Waring rushed 20 times for 96 yards and a touchdown in the first half but did not play after intermission. Sumter took a 7-0 lead with just under six minutes left in the first quarter, but Wando answered with Waring's touchdown and a failed PAT to reduce its deficit to 7-6.

The Gamecocks extended their lead to 21-6 at halftime after two touchdowns came off Wando turnovers -- a Waring fumble and a quarterback Bailey Hart interception.

In the third quarter, the Warriors scored on a six-yard scamper by running back Nick Taylor, and Sumter added a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, junior defensive back Kort Stutz led Wando in tackles with six solo and four assists. Junior linebacker Tyler Ragsdale added six solo and two assists, including one for a loss.

Wando was handed the No. 16 seed in the 16-team 4A Division I postseason bracket and will travel to No. 1 Byrnes (10-1) on Friday. The Rebels' only loss came at Northwestern (11-0) in overtime, Sept. 13.

Byrnes, which has won 11 state titles including the past two championships, averages 56.6 points per game while allowing 24.4 points.
