School children in Cambodia

Skyla Campbell, a member of a local 4-H club, began working with a missionary named Sarah Hipp who is also a former 4-H’er. Hipp operates a school in Rwanda and the people of the immediate area are always in need of supplies.

Wanting to help, Campbell began emailing local businesses to see if they would donate. “By the end of it, we sent 100 shirts with help of Peace Frogs and Charleston Cotton Exchange, over 35 brand news shoes for a refugee camp because of Kassis Bros. Shoes, 25 sock monkeys from a Pier One store and tons of art supplies from Artist and Craftsman,” she said.

“It was amazing getting the pictures back and actually seeing the shirts we got donated being worn half-way across the world. So I started partnering with more schools and then orphanages. We now have had soccer balls donated by the Charleston Battery, Wonder Works donated kazoos, The Citadel Women’s Soccer Team Head Coach donated soccer balls, Chick-fil-A donated cows, Palmetto Moon donated shirts and many more companies and small businesses have and are getting involved.”

Campbell said she is now are working with schools and orphanages in 15 different countries. “Although we’re still sending shirts, toys and supplies, I noticed books were always needed. So with the help of our local Barnes & Noble store, we’re having a bookfair on Saturday, Nov. 23 to get books for all different countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia as our next step in this project.”

The book fair will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Barnes and Noble store in Towne Centere from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Starting Nov. 16, use the code CC4H for free shipping and 30 percent at outofprintclothing.com to raise funds for shipping and school supplies.
