Encore Dance Theatre branched from The Dance Arts Studio in Mount Pleasant. Encore Dance Theatre is a non-profit organization that enables serious dancers to showcase their talent and skills in community performances in Charleston and its surrounding areas. A Dance Company made up of all local dancers, EDT takes pride in bringing to its audiences the beauty and technical skill of classical ballet as well as contemporary dance in Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop and Lyrical works.

Encore Dance Theatre consists of 40 dancers from ages 7 to 18, some who have been training classically since they were three. “Classical ballet is the backbone of all types dance. It creates the foundation for a controlled, disciplined, poised and graceful dancer,” states Melanie Keen, director and president of Encore Dance Theatre. “Being a company member requires year-round training and classes. Our dancers attend summer intensive programs, not only at our studio here in Mount Pleasant, but at other venues in the Charleston area and all over the country. We have also had master classes conducted by instructors such as Davis Robertson, director of the Joffrey Ballet School’s Performance Company.”

The role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, in the upcoming Holiday Spectacular, is being danced by Caitlin Simpson, a 16-year-old home schooled student, who has attended these master classes. Kevin Nichols, a choreographer for EDT as well as a performer in this year’s performance, dancing the roles of the Snow Prince and the Cavalier to the Sugar Plum Fairy, has been classically trained as well. Previous members of the company have attended the USC Conservatory’s Summer Program, Joffrey Ballet School’s Summer Intensives, as well as the American Ballet Theatre’s Summer Intensives held in Alabama and New York.

The choreographers and instructors for Encore Dance Theatre are Melanie Keen, Brittany Miles, Kevin Nichols, Michelle Nichols and Caroline Byrd, who all have credentials to support the level of training required for the dancers at this company level. Keen has studied in New York at the Broadway Dance Center; Miles has studied under Dena Rizzo, tWitch from “So You Think You Can Dance;” and they have all trained under the instruction of Barbara Counts and Cecilia Sprawls, formerly of South Carolina Dance Theatre, Patricia Miller, a former Joffrey Ballet Principal dancer, and Radenko Povlovich, with the Columbia Classical Ballet.

The dancers of Encore Dance Theatre are committed and disciplined young girls and boys who are very enthusiastic about the art of dance. Their amazing performances will shine in the upcoming performance, the “Holiday Spectacular” at the Charleston Music Hall on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. Performing excerpts from The Nutcracker Suite and other Christmas classics, Encore Dance Theatre will get everyone in the Christmas spirit.
