November is lung cancer and COPD awareness month. Lung cancer is a complicated disease affecting over 370,000 Americans each year. It is the most common cancer worldwide, accounting for 1.3 million deaths annually. The lung cancer five-year survival rate (16.3 percent) is lower than other leading cancer sites, such as the colon (65.2 percent), breast (90.0 percent), and prostate (99.9 percent). COPD, also known as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. It causes serious long-term disability and early death. There is no cure for COPD at this time.
To raise funds and awareness for lung health and lung disease, the American Lung Association and Lucey Mortgage Corporation have partnered to host the 2013 Fight for Air Run/Walk. The event raises funds to support the more than 35 million individuals who suffer from lung disease. The event took place on Nov. 9 at Folly Beach and included free breakfast by Locklear’s on the pier following the races. The Fight For Air Run/Walk was fun for the whole family and includes a mission-related costume contest, race and fundraising awards, and music by Annalise. Funding raised supports lung disease research, lung health education programs, lung disease support groups, and healthy air initiatives.
Lorcan Lucey, president of Lucey Mortgage, is a long-time supporter of the Lung Association and knows what it is like to suffer from lung disease. He was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease in 2007 and received a double lung transplant in 2011. Lorcan states that “The American Lung Association supports the clinical trials and teaching that were part of saving my life.”
