The annual luncheon for the Volunteer Services Organization at East Cooper Medical Center was held at Dunes West Country Club on Nov. 5. At the luncheon, volunteers were honored for their service and awarded pins for the number of hours they have volunteered at East Cooper Medical Center. The highlight of the luncheon was the announcement of the “Volunteer of the Year” award.

This year there was a tie and two volunteers were honored with the prestigious “Volunteer of the Year” award, Audrey Smith and Patty Stephens. Alice “Skeet” Brown was also recognized for being a volunteer at East Cooper for over 20 years. Skeet, a former president of the VSO and a former recipient of the “Volunteer of the Year” award, has volunteered for many years in the hospital’s gift shop.

The Volunteer Services Organization (VSO), a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization at East Cooper Medical Center, supports patients, visitors, and physicians of East Cooper Medical Center as well as the community. The VSO manages the hospital gift shop and organizes fundraisers, using all proceeds to benefit local charities. They also provide funding to patients that cannot afford their prescribed medications and award scholarships to college students that choose to pursue a degree in the healthcare field.

“Volunteers are vital in providing quality care to our patients. We appreciate each and every one of our volunteers who devote so much of their time to helping patients at East Cooper Medical Center,” commented Jason Alexander, CEO.
