IoP Connector Run raises big money

The Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child raises big money for seven local children’s charities Seven local charities which provide services for the prevention and treatment of child abuse were the big winners when they received checks for the money raised by the Isle of Palms Connector Run and Walk for the Child. This annual event which was held on Oct. 5 is promoted by the Mount Pleasant Exchange Club, Isle of Palms Exchange Club, City of Mount Pleasant and City of Isle of Palms.

This 5k/10k Race is held each year on the first weekend in October on the Isle of Palms. The course runs from the entrance to the IOP Connector on Palm Boulevard, over the Connector toward Mount Pleasant with the finish line on J.C. Long Boulevard. With the help of generous sponsors, 1,260 runners and walkers, more than 100 volunteers and many spectators the event raised $50,000 this year. The check presentation ceremony was held Nov. 7 at Water Dog Grill in Mount Pleasant with Race Committee Chairman Dimi Matouchev presiding. Attendees included Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms Exchange Club members, Isle of Palms Mayor Dick Cronin , Mount Pleasant Council Member Ken Glasson, Representatives from each non-profit group receiving checks, Race Committee members and race sponsors. Geoff Waggoner from Waggoner Law Firm, the presenting sponsor of the event, delivered the $50,000 check to Kristin Power, president of the Mount Pleasant Exchange Club, and Patrick Harrington, President of the Isle of Palms Exchange Club.

Charities which received checks include Windwood Farm Home for Boys, Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center, Charleston Youth Development Center, HALOS of Charleston, Family Corps (aka Parents Anonymous), Darkness to Light, and Lowcountry Orphan Relief. Each charity representative described how their work had touched the lives of children and families with a personal story of those who had been helped.

This annual event is the primary fundraiser for the Isle of Palms and Mount Pleasant Exchange Clubs. With 700 clubs and more than 21,000 members in the United States and Puerto Rico, Exchange is the oldest service organization operating exclusively in the United States. Exchange sponsors activities designed to benefit, award and develop our nation’s youth, promote crime prevention, serve senior citizens and recognize military and public safety service providers. Exchange also promotes Americanism programs, and its national project is the prevention of child abuse.
