Local sailor heading to world championship

  • Friday, November 22, 2013

A 17-year-high school sailor from Mount Pleasant, Marc DeLoach, captured the Southeast Regional Championship for the Sunfish Class during a two day regatta Nov 9 and 10 on Lake Murray.

The field of competitors consisted of 25 skilled hopefuls, all keenly aware that only one would clinch the slot as the SE USA representative to the Sunfish World Championship in 2014.

After light winds with a single race on day one, day two produced excellent racing conditions and five solid races. Marc DeLoach finished on top with a combination of first place and second place finishes, decisively ahead of the field. In addition to earning a spot at the Worlds, for the win, DeLoach was awarded the Columbia Sailing Club’s Willard H. Davis Trophy for the first place win in the largest class at the Midlands Regatta.

Later this month, DeLoach will skipper for the School of the Arts High School Sailing Team as they compete on the national stage at the Great Oaks Regatta in New Orleans.
