Striped Pig Distillery takes home Charleston’s Lowcountry Hoedown’s top prize

  • Saturday, November 23, 2013

This year’s Low Country Hoedown was a huge success with more than 1,500 attendees. Seven Handle Circus and The Barefoot Movement rocked the downtown bus shed while guests enjoyed food and drink from all around, or as they put it, “west of the Mississippi and below the Mason-Dixon line.”

Several restaurants and catering companies brought truckloads of delicious “hoedown” fare while over a dozen distilleries kept patrons hydrated. Striped Pig Distillery, Charleston’s first micro-distillery, was awarded “Best Cocktail.”

Striped Pig Distillery truly is the “spirit” of Charleston. All of their products are 100 percent locally made and bottled at onsite in Charleston. Their raw materials are grown as close to home as possible, with corn from Myer’s Farm in Bowman and molasses from Savannah.

Despite having only been in operation for a few months, Striped Pig Distillery beat several nationally-acclaimed distilleries as well as those who have been in business for hundreds of years. They even topped last year’s winner, Palmetto Moonshine, as well as other local distilleries like Dark Corner Distilling. Could it be the local ingredients and slow, handcrafted process used to make the spirits that set the brand apart? Distiller Todd Weiss thinks so.

“We put a lot of time and energy into making our spirits. We don’t cut any corners. We are committed to serving a locally made product that’s made the old-fashioned way, and I think that’s what gives our spirits that extra flavor which makes such a great cocktail,” Weiss said of the big win.

Striped Pig Distillery served their Striped Rum and 120 proof Striped ‘Shine. The rum was mixed with locally made Jack Rudy Grenadine and Newtonian Beverage Company Bitters to make Charleston Striped Rum Punch. The ‘Shine was used to make the Striped ‘Shine Ginger and Lemongrass cocktail. All of the ingredients used to make the cocktails were locally sourced.

“Even the lemongrass was grown out back behind the distillery. We are fortunate to have a partnership with our friends at Icebox Bar Services and they have an incredible knowledge of mixology. They seem to really enjoy working with our spirits because of the unique and organic flavor profiles,” President, Casey Lillie said.

All of Striped Pig’s products are gluten-free and on sale in several liquor stores in South Carolina as well as being served in many bars and restaurants. If your local liquor store does not carry Striped Pig, tell them that their distributor is Ben Arnold Beverage Company.

Striped Pig Distillery is open for free tours and tastings, Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Tours begin at the top of every hour. You may also schedule your own tour at anytime during business hours, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday noon to 5 p.m. on their website, www.stripedpigdistillery.com.
