ECCO provides Thanksgiving to local families

  • Sunday, November 24, 2013

This year East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) will distribute Thanksgiving meals to low income neighbors. ECCO clients, which include the working poor, the elderly and disabled, can come to the ECCO warehouse and pick up a turkey voucher and their sides on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ECCO will provide turkeys and sides to more than 450 families in our area.

Local schools, businesses and families collected cans of pumpkin and cranberry sauce, stuffing and all the other items that make up Thanksgiving.

Once again ECCO has asked clients if they could make a donation to help with the cost of the meal. “We explained their giving a small monetary donation would ‘pass it forward’ to help someone else. This way each client can feel as if they participated in giving back to the community as well” said Kathryn Harrison, director of safety net services.

An anonymous client said, ‘For all that ECCO has done for me when times have been hard, this is the least I can do.’

Jack Little, executive director remarked, “Last year, a lady came for emergency food and ended up, receiving an entire Thanksgiving meal. She broke down crying telling the volunteer she did not expect to have a Thanksgiving meal because the year had been so bad.”
