McClellanville Arts Center to open exhibit Dec. 6

  • Thursday, November 28, 2013

Self-taught artist May Brailsford was a beloved figure in McClellanville, planting trees for future generations and presenting newlywed couples with her paintings of shrimp boats and magnolias. As a child in the 1880s and 1890s, she was brash and sassy, so prone to get in arguments that her classmates nicknamed her “Maypop.” When Brailsford died in 1971, she left behind a captivating account of her childhood in the village. Her granddaughter, artist Mary Ingalls Cote, has brought this story to life with 25 charming illustrations.

Like the “Little House” books of Laura Ingalls Wilder, “May: Tales from a Lowcountry Village” is a story that will appeal to all ages. The McClellanville Arts Council, in partnership with Home House Press, will publish “Maypop” just in time for the holidays as a full-color paperback.

An exhibit of Mary Ingalls Cote’s original illustrations and paintings by May Brailsford will open in our gallery on Dec. 6. There will be an opening reception Dec. 6 from 5-9 p.m.

Copies of the Book “Maypop” and commemorative Redbuds will be available for purchase.

The McClellanville Arts Center is located at 733 Pinckney St. in McClellanville. The

art center is generally open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or by appointment. Please call ahead if you are planning on a visit to the village at 843-887-3157.
