The Bishop England Battling Bishops suffered a 52-37 season-opening loss to the Pinewood Prep Panthers Wednesday in the first round of the Military Magnet Thanksgiving Classic.

Bishop England (0-1) was held scoreless through the first five minutes of the game as Pinewood applied pressure to force the Bishops into difficult shot attempts.

Senior Dillon Corbett carried the Bishops back into the game with seven second-quarter points. The Bishops outscored the Panthers 15-4 in the second quarter to erase an early 11-point deficit and build a 21-17 lead heading into halftime.

Corbett finished with a team-high 13 points, while B.J. Grevey turned in 11.

“I think we played a little nervous coming out of the gate,” Bishop England head coach Bryan Grevey said. “But we stepped it up real big in the second quarter which I think was important for our confidence coming in at halftime.”

The Bishops maintained a lead deep into the third quarter but allowed the Panthers to work back into the game as turnovers slowed their offense. Trailing by four points a minute into the fourth quarter, Bishop England committed four straight turnovers that Pinewood used to build a 12-point lead and seize control of the game.

Bishop England finished with 20 turnovers on the night. Dexter Coaxum turned in 18 points for Pinewood to lead all scorers. Three other Panthers scored eight or more.

“The issue tonight was the turnover bug,” said Coach Grevey. “Most of them came in the second half. That combined with our rebounding in the second half made the difference in the outcome of the game.”

Bishop England falls into the consolation bracket and will face Costal Christian at 2 p.m. Friday. Coastal Christian fell to Military Magnet in the opening round.
