Five local athletes from Charleston Taekwondo brought home 13 medals, including five golds, from the HaTaeKyung Taekwondo Championships in Atlanta Nov. 16 and 17 where more than 500 kids ages 4-18 competed.

Calvin Volkmann, 6, a green belt from Mount Pleasant competing in his second tournament, brought home gold in both forms and board breaking while earning a bronze in sparring.

Jackson Millet, 8, a green stripe belt from Mount Pleasant, got the gold in board breaking plus two silver medals in forms and sparring.

Competing in their first tournaments, red stripe belt Collin Aleksak, 11, and yellow belt Russ Ugur, 12, both turned in gold medal performances in board breaking.

Ugur, of Sullivan’s Island, also earned silver medals in forms and sparring while Mount Pleasant’s Aleksak came home with bronze medals in those two events.

Competing in the black stripe belt class, 15-year-old Jesse Taylor of North Charleston won a silver medal in her sparring match.

Charleston Taekwondo coach Donovan Rider said he could not be prouder of his athletes, most having started Taekwondo within the past year.

“Their hard work and dedication to being the best is something to be admired,” said Rider, South Carolina native who competed in the 2010 Olympic Trials for Taekwondo. “These athletes have what it takes to go all the way.”

Charleston Taekwondo will head to Atlanta again in February for a sparring-only tournament before competing in the state championships in Columbia in March.
