“To Hear Them Tell It: Memories of Growing Up in Charleston” has been published by Charleston Guide Books. This anthology resulted from fourth-generation Charlestonian Mary Coy’s interviews of more than two dozen other natives who grew up in various sections of the city.

Rather than biographies of political and civic leaders, these stories reflect a sense of place in an earlier Charleston as told by people in the work-a-day world. In addition to depicting life on the peninsula, there are a number of references to life East of the Cooper in an earlier time.

For newcomers who wish to glimpse a Charleston they may not know existed and for long-time residents whose own memories will be rekindled by reading it, this book portrays local history and culture from those who lived it.

A booksigning is planned for Saturday, Dec. 14, from noon to 3 p.m. at Boone Hall Farms. The book is also available at the Preservation Society and the Historic Charleston Foundation as well as on Amazon.
