Lincoln Middle High School’s Middle School is scheduled to visit Washington, D.C. on April 8-10 as an effort to build schema for students who receive Title I funding and to increase their literacy scores. The middle school has been receiving a lot of attention recently as they have improved from “at risk” to “average” at the state level with a good absolute rating overall for the middle school. The school’s federal report card rating has also improved from “F’ last year to “A” this year.
With initiatives such as after school tutoring, teacher mentors and the 21st century program which is a grant from Clemson University, middle school students are receiving individualized attention to meet their learning needs. It is the teachers at LMHS’s hope that this trip will further enhance student learning and encourage the idea that education can extend beyond the classroom.
Students have been participating in a variety of fundraisers including selling chocolate bars; they will also be selling food, ornaments, bracelets and other affordably- priced holiday gifts at the McClellanville Art Walk on Dec. 6 and 7. While students are taking this active role in fundraising for this trip, they need additional help. “It is our hope to provide a trip for our students that they may not otherwise be able to take,” says Margaret Crouch, who has been teaching in McClellanville for 10 years and whom Principal Dr. Commodore credits with being one of the driving forces behind raising test scores at the middle school level. LMHS is asking media outlets and interested donors for any assistance with funding this trip and helping the school promote literacy, build schema and ultimately enhance our students’ education as a part of vision 2016.
