The Citadel and Google are looking for brilliant, creative, fun-loving young minds

Registration is now open for Storm The Citadel! 2014 trebuchet competition. The Citadel’s STEM Center of Excellence and Google will host the popular event on the college’s campus, Feb. 15. Teams of elementary, middle, high school and college students, as well as teams from community groups, the military, and South Carolina businesses compete to design, build and launch a trebuchet. A trebuchet is a machine that was used in medieval siege warfare for hurling large stones or other missiles. Storm The Citadel! competitors will launch small rubber balls (in the Hoplite, K-5 Division) or lacrosse balls, with awards given for accuracy, distance, spirit and design.

To compete, teams must complete an online application by Dec. 15. Teams in the Hoplite Division will receive a trebuchet kit. All student teams (K-12) can request mentoring support and apply for funds to help with team expenses.

To assist teams in preparing for the competition, The Citadel will host a free physics workshop on Jan. 13 for mentors and teachers of registered teams in all divisions. To register a group for the competition or to learn more, please visit the Storm The Citadel! website or visit the competition’s Facebook page. The event draws a large crowd of enthusiastic onlookers; there is no admission charge.

Storm The Citadel! 2014 will kick off the college’s Eweek events, which are held in conjunction with National Engineers Week. The intent is to introduce Lowcountry students to engineering fields and activities. The Citadel has the fifth oldest engineering school in the United States.
