Free throws in the final seconds of the fourth quarter sank the Bishop England Battling Bishops against the Garrett Tech Falcons Saturday in day three of the Military Magnet Thanksgiving Classic.

Bishop England (1-2) hit 1-of-2 free throws with less than 30 seconds to play to tie the game at 56. But on the following possession, Bishop England fouled Garrett on a three-point attempt in the waning seconds of the game, sending him to the line where one would be enough for the win.

“Obviously you don’t want to foul in that position but it really wasn’t anybody’s fault, we were just trying to make a play at the end of the game,” Bishop England head coach Bryan Grevey said. “There were a lot of good teaching moments toward the end of the game and, hopefully, we can learn from it.”

The Bishops closed the first quarter trailing by seven as they struggled to defend forward Vincent Cole and the Falcons post with their man defense. A switch to zone closed off the paint and allowed Bishop England to trim the lead down to 28-27 heading into halftime. The Bishops traded baskets with the Falcons throughout the second half and entered the final minute of the game with a one-point advantage.

Cole finished with a game-high 22 points for Garrett. B.J. Grevey led the Bishops with 17 points. Grevey averaged 18 per through three games to earn All-Tournament honors. Forward Dillon Corbett added 17 of his own, while Lawton Fosberry turned in seven.

“We really took away a lot from this tournament in terms of defining our team,” Coach Grevey said. “The goal in a tournament like this is to develop a rotation, try to see who can help the team the most.”

Bishop England hosts Palmetto Christian Academy (1-0) Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the front-end of a two-game series.

“PCA knows us as well as we know them. There’s no secrets,” Coach Grevey said. “Coach (Brian) Stanley does an excellent job with them. It comes down to the hustle plays and doing the small things right to win the game.”
