Mount Pleasant senior, Marc DeLoach, skippered the School of the Arts Sailing Team to an outstanding finish Nov. 23 and 24 as the team competed on the national stage at the Great Oaks Invitational in New Orleans.

The SOA locals finished a notable fourth place of 40 teams from all around the U.S. and the Virgin Islands, each of whom had to earn their spot in the regatta through qualifying competitions in 2013. During the two day battle on Lake Pontchartrain, the sailing conditions were extremely tough and most races took place under an active small craft advisory. Cold temperatures, reduced visibility, and gusty winds of over 25 kts produced impressive waves that tested both competitor and equipment limits.

Marc DeLoach skippered all 16 races while alternating through five crew members - Marco Lanier, Oliver Penegar, Sarah DeLoach, Fiona Lewis and Nick Heinen. The SOA students finished cold, very wet and a little bruised but excited about their team’s success.

While in New Orleans, SOA sailors also had time to visit the French Quarter where they enjoyed jazz, street performers and some delicious baguettes at the famous Café du Monde.
