The S.C. United Mount Pleasant U16 97 Crescent girls soccer team won the President Medal Cup state championship in Greenville Sunday with a 1-0 overtime win over the American Youth Soccer Organization.

In the opening minutes of the first overtime period, Alexandra Wain netted what would end up being the game-winner as 97 Crescent's defense and midfield play led by Megan MacAulay and Lillie Bradshaw preserved the advantage for the championship victory.

The win was 97 Crescent's fourth of the weekend as they charged through group play toward the championship match.

Skylar Davis opened the weekend Saturday with a game-winning free kick with less than a minute to play to lift 97 Crescent over Congaree Rapid Soccer Association Sky 97. Goalkeeper Hannah Miner preserved the shutout for 97 Crescent with the help of defenders Morgan Blackwell, Samantha Hilleshiem, MacAulay, Lyndsay McNally, Kylie Egan and Shanna Hyland. Mary Alice Strohmeyer scored two goals, and Wain and Brittany Miles both added one in a 4-0 shutout of Furman United Soccer Club in 97 Crescent's second game Saturday.

The girls closed out group play Sunday with a 6-1 win over Summerville Soccer Club to claim first place in their group and advance to the championship round. Strohmeyer, Wain, Miles, Kellen Haas, Jensen Haldrup and Skylar Davis each scored for 97 Crescent.

Crescent was without Taylor Cristo, Sydney James and Hayley Keiser who were sidelined with injuries but each played a major role in advancing the team to the championship weekend. Crescententered the weekend as the tournament's No. 1 seed after winning the Fall League Championship with a 9-1-2 record, outscoring opponents by a combined 29-3. The team finished 24-4-4 overall this season, capturing championships in the North Mecklenburg Fall Kickoff and the SCUMP Charleston Select Shootout Tournament along the way. Their state championship win qualifies them for a bid to the region championship tournament June 12-16 in Decatur, Ala. The team is coached by Hope Atkinson and Jeff Hoerner.
