The Palmetto Christian Academy Eagles erased a 10-point halftime deficit to pull out a 60-58 win over the Faith Christian Knights Monday in Mount Pleasant.
Trailing 28-18 at halftime, Palmetto Christian (2-2) limited Faith Christian to just eight points in the third quarter as Knights star Theron Reddy sat with foul trouble. Reddy finished with 18 points, 14 rebounds and six steals and kept Faith Christian close through the fourth quarter but couldn't close the gap as Palmetto Christian held a five-point lead in the final seconds before a Knights three at the buzzer.
“We started out really slow, kind of lackadaisical, missing a bunch of shots,” Palmetto Christian head coach Brian Stanley said. “I challenged our guys at halftime to crank up the intensity and they came out ready to play.
“It was good to see them grind out a win. You have to be able to do that throughout the season.”
J.T. Waters and Will Tuchfarber returned from North-South All-Star football weekend Monday to combine for 22 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Mitch Hogan added nine points, six rebounds and a steal. The Eagles received 18 points from the bench, including a 13-point effort from Sam Iriart who knocked down 4-of-5 threes.
“Sam was crucial because there's no big drop off when he comes in the game,” Stanley said. “With the minutes he's played lately, his confidence is up and he's playing at a really high level.
“We've started out strong before but this was a whole different challenge for our team. Stop after stop, our defense led to our offense.”
Palmetto Christian travels to Daniel Island Tuesday to face Bishop England at 7:30 p.m.
