Wando Warriors basketball continued its march through the non-conference slate Friday with a 61-33 road win over the James Island Charter Trojans.

Wando (5-0) grabbed control early off the hot shooting of senior guard Andrew Glover and a stifling 2-2-1 defensive press. Glover dropped in seven points in the first quarter to help the Warriors outscore the Trojans 19-8 in the opening frame.

“Our press forced a lot of turnovers early in the game, which gave us a lot of early shots,” Wando head coach David Eaton said. “I thought we did a good job of setting a lot of screens for our shooters. We did a great job of communicating defensively and didn't let them take a lot of shots without our hands in their face.”

The Warriors defense limited the Trojans to just 14 second-half points while Jamez Rogers and Matt Pegram paced the offense. Wando put the game away early in the fourth quarter with a 10-0 to through the opening minutes. Rogers finished with 18 points and five rebounds, while Pegram turned in 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

“(Pegram) was just scoring at will for a while there. He has a way of just wearing teams down,” Eaton said. “Jamez and Amp (Moore) started driving inside and finishing their shots. We were just plugging away at the end of the game.”

The Warriors look to keep their perfect start intact Friday as they return home to host the Northwood Academy Chargers at 8:30 p.m.

“I'm very pleased with how we're doing right now,” Eaton said. “I never go into the season thinking about wins and losses but I'm not surprised we're winning right now because I know what these guys are capable of. We still have some things we need to work on and we need to keep getting better to keep this up, but right now, I'm proud of how we've started the season.”

Lady Warriors fall

The Wando Lady Warriors continue their search for the first win of the season after a 34-19 loss at James Island Charter.

Wando (0-4) fell into an early 17-4 hole through the first quarter and entered halftime trailing 27-12. The Lady Warriors turned up their defense in the second half, limiting James Island to just seven points but could only generate seven themselves.

Kimberly Smalls finished with a team-high seven points, seven rebounds, two steals and block for Wando, while Courtney Wood added six points and steal.

Wando hosts Northwood Friday at 7 p.m.
