Pages: The unsung heroes of the library

Meet the four four fantastic pages at Mount Pleasant Regional: Carol, Cheryl, Christopher and James. PHOTO PROVIDED

Have you ever wondered how all the library materials get back on the shelves and in proper order? More likely, you’ve never given it a thought. Which brings me to the library’s unsung heroes – our pages.

“Page” is the job title given to staff who shelve library materials. A recent job posting also notes these duties and qualifications: “Basic maintenance of the collection and premises. Other duties as assigned. Must have the stamina for periods of walking, standing, reaching, bending, stooping and kneeling. Must be able to lift book crates weighing up to approximately 50 pounds and push book carts weighing up to approximately 100 pounds. Weekend work included.”

It is not a job for the faint of heart, especially at Mount Pleasant Regional. Our pages work very hard to reshelve more than 50,000 items each month. They get some help from our wonderful volunteers and occasionally from other staff when things get backed up, but the pages do the bulk of this work.

For 15 hours each week, our pages lift, bend and stoop. They push those heavy book carts around. They empty the book drop in all kinds of weather and push packed carts over the rough surface of the parking lot. Then they strain their eyes and necks reading spine labels to put the items in the correct shelf order.

We are fortunate to have four fantastic pages at Mount Pleasant Regional: Carol, Cheryl, Christopher and James. They are definitely our library heroes.
