The Bishop England Battling Bishops completed the season sweep of the Palmetto Christian Academy Eagles Tuesday with a 70-33 win on Daniel Island.

Holding on to a three-point lead after the first quarter, Bishop England (3-2) caught fire in the second quarter, scoring 26 points while limiting Palmetto Christian (2-4) to just eight. The Bishops took a 36-18 lead heading into halftime led by B.J. Grevey who scored 14 points through the first half.

“They played great defense and ran their stuff well,” Palmetto Christian head coach Brian Stanley said. “I thought they did a better job tonight of trying to get B.J. open and he really got it going. Than ran him off screens well, knocked down shots. They just blitzed us.”

The Bishops held the Eagles to just five points in the third quarter while they rang up 15 built off of eight from Grevey and four from forward Dillon Corbett. Grevey finished with a game-high 22 points with four rebounds and two steals, while Corbett added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“We just kept attacking,” Bishop England head coach Bryan Grevey said. “We tried to get the ball inside, rebound. Fortunately, we made some baskets, but we did get some second chances too and that helped.”

The Bishops’ reserves entered with a 28-point advantage in the fourth quarter and closed the game on an 11-0 run through the final three minutes. Thomas Hanahan and Baylor Rollins both scored seven points in the fourth quarter off the bench. Fourteen Bishops saw playing time Tuesday.

“I thought from the first guy that got in the game to the 14th guy, they all gave a great effort,” Coach Grevey said. “We watched the film and realized, the other night, we did some things that we could improve on. (B.E. defeated P.C.A 70-59 Dec. 4) We had four or five days to work on that in practice and I thought it carried over into the game tonight.”

Mitch Hogan led Palmetto Christian with 12 points to go with six rebounds. Ben German added eight points, 10 rebounds and a block, and Andrew Johnstone scored six points in the fourth quarter.

“I wasn’t pleased with our focus,” Stanley said. “We’ve had enough practice that my veterans know what offense to run but we had spans where nobody was talking to each other or communicating and it hurt us.”

Palmetto Christian looks to rebound Saturday in Sumter against Wilson Hall at 5:15 p.m.. Bishop England will travel to Mount Pleasant Saturday to face Wando, tipping off at 7 p.m.

Boykin leads Lady Bishops

Michele Boykin scored 28 points in three quarters Tuesday to propel the Bishop England Lady Bishops to an 86-44 home win over Palmetto Christian.

Palmetto Christian (2-4) stayed in the game through the opening five minutes, holding the Bishops to a six-point lead. But the slim advantage quickly grew as Bishop England (4-0) once again used its defense to generate quick scoring sprees. The Bishops closed the quarter on a 10-4 run. They opened the second quarter with three straight steals that Boykin turned into three quick baskets. By halftime the Bishops held a 47-24 lead and Boykin had scored 20.

Bishop England held Palmetto Christian scoreless through the third quarter while building a 43-point lead — good enough to sit the starters the rest of the game. Mary Harriet Moore scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds in three quarters of play. Hannah Corbett added 15, two steals and block. The Bishops finished with 27 steals and outrebounded Palmetto Christian 34-19.

For Palmetto Christian, Annie Pascutti scored 15 points, and Lizzie Wilson added 13.

Bishop England travels to Wando Saturday, while Palmetto Christian visits Wilson Hall on Friday.
