Charleston’s only on-going songwriter’s series continues to gain momentum with it’s upcoming performance by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion at the Circular Congregational Church. Trusted by musical enthusiasts in the Southeast, Sun Coast Promotions and Awendaw Green offer music listeners a pristine setting with world-class talent.

Nearly a decade after the pair put out their first album together, Guthrie and Irion feel like they’ve finally hit their stride on Wassaic Way, a collection of 11 new songs released in August on Rte 8 Records. “It was the first time we’d ever taken our time with a record and really gotten it right,” Irion says. “When I listen to the album, there’s not much I would change, and that’s hard to say with other records we’ve made.”

Married in 1999, both Guthrie and Irion come from creative backgrounds – Guthrie is the youngest daughter of Arlo Guthrie and granddaughter of Woody Guthrie; while Irion is the grand-nephew of author John Steinbeck, and his mother, Rubilee Knight, is a classical violinist. With all the time they spend together on tour, and at home raising their two daughters, writing songs is more of a solitary pursuit for each of them. As the studio dates approach, they share what they’ve come up with and offer suggestions and ideas.

Opening the show will be Danielle Howle + Firework Show, a mix of world rhythms to honky-tonk swamp. Howle is an underground favorite crossing musical genres and bringing people together who are lovers of song craft. She has opened for Avett Brothers, Bob Dylan, Indigo Girls, to name a few. Seeing Howle with her new ensemble, Firework Show is where her vocal ability and fine songs sizzle and amaze crowds with an elegant command of the stage.

Come celebrate the new release “Wassaice Way” by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irions and catch Danielle Howle + Firework Show as they record a live record this night in the venue.
